3 girls starting their hike to the summit of Indian Head.

It was a stunning late fall day. The morning air was warmer than anticipated, barely a whisper of a chill. My 3 compadres and I headed for Keene Valley at about 8am. After a quick stop at Stewart's(pls sponsor me) for some coffee and grub, we were of to the races.

The Start of Our Journey...

We learned the day before that you need to reserve a parking spot in advance to hike Indian Head. Luckily, peak fall foliage was good and gone, so us goons secured a spot with no trouble. The parking lot was nearly empty when we arrived around 9:30am. After a quick trip to the porta-potty and some light stretching, we hit the road.

Just some light walkin

The trail to the Summit of Indian Head starts out as an easy walk on a paved, residential road. The vibes were high, the views were already impeccable, we were feeling' good. Already sweaty, but good.

You eventually hit a building where you sign in for your hike and a trail guide makes sure you know where you're going, as there are multiple trails to take, and multiple summits you can get to from this area.

Sights were seen, water was drank, socks were soaked

Though being a longer hike of about 10 miles, the trail isn't very difficult.

We saw a couple of beautiful waterfalls on a rocky part of trail, and tripped a few times on those slick little buggers. While walking on a particularly muddy section of the trail, Ava(pictured here) let out a screech as her boot entered a deep puddle of muddy sludge. Since we happened to be by a stream, she opted to let the dogs out and bum a spare, albeit ill-fitting, sock, off of one of our counterparts. After this short hiatus spent sitting on some wet rocks while Ava rebooted(pun intended), we were back in the game. Side note: we were profusely sweating at this point, as it had reached a whopping 65 degrees.

Almost There...

As we neared the summit, we got a peak of magnificent views through the trees. Living in the Adirondacks and hiking a new trail never ceases to amaze me.

Had broken into my snack stash for a stick of jerky at this point, but still feeling great.

And suddenly there we were...

At the summit. Such an iconic spot and breathtaking view. We were the only ones up there for some time, and we popped a squat and broke out our rations. Let me just say, the wind was WHIPPING. So the sweat we had accumulated on the journey was now icy cold. After a few minutes of solitude, a nice French family joined us at the summit, and we took each others group photo. The vibes were immaculate.

Concluding Thoughts...

If you have the opportunity to hike Indian Head, do itttt. Bring plenty of water(I had a 2L bladder and a 32oz bottle) and snacks wacky's, stay on the trail, and spend 10 miles off your phone, enjoying nature.

Until Next Time,

Grace
